OSCAR CRONK on trapping radio

trapping radio podcast

Tonight on Trapping Across America we have a legend in the trapping industry, OSCAR CRONK. I had the pleasure and the honor to interview Oscar Cronk when I was in Maine. This is a cool interview to say the least. We talk about trapping and hunting in the great north country. We also get into muskrat trapping, mink trapping, human odor with coyotes and fox, bobcat trapping and his love of hunting bobcats with hounds in Maine. This is a long show, but action packed for the Organic Free Range Wild Fur Farmer. I stole ( forgive me Oscar) some of his text on his web-site. Talk about trapping history in ones life and business!

Welcome to the outdoor supply house that is a continuation from the Arnold family that started the trend back in 1870. Lon Arnold was a market hunter in Maine, when it was legal. He hunted caribou, bear, moose, deer, and trapped elusive animals that roamed the wild forests of Maine. He developed scents to attract all these animals.

In 1918, Lon’s son, Walter, was the pioneer in America for developing and selling deer lures, trapping lures, and dog training and breaking scents for houndsmen. For 44 years he continued the Arnold tradition of making and selling animal scents. Oscar Cronk became friends with Walter Arnold, the legendary mountain man, and bought the Arnold business in 1962. Since that time he has used the Arnold knowledge along with his 50 years experience developing the best deer and bear lures on the market today. Oscar, well known hunter, trapper, houndsmen, and veteran outdoorsman makes and tests every product before it’s placed on the market.

From the 1870s to the new millennium the Arnold and Cronk tradition of serving sportsmen has never stopped. The knowledge gained by Lon and Walter Arnold has been transferred to Oscar Cronk. Oscar is not only the heir to this dynasty, but is the “Last of the Breed.”

So much truth in your “rant”. You are dead on when you talk about what it takes to get a 10K raise. I recently told my boss “Why in the world do I want a raise? Obama will take half and flush it down the toilet, my wife will take the other half and flush it down the toilet and I’ll end up working my butt off for nothing”.

At least when I’m trapping I’m putting food on the table and fur money in the bank. I’m reinvesting everything I make into traps and PM’s. Both traps and precious metals are tangibles that will last for years and years.

I recently got paid $450 to catch one beaver. A wealthy home owners association had an elderly resident that lived on a lake and a beaver was damaging his dogwoods. They were willing to pay anything to get the situation resolved to shut him up. I quoted them $450 a month as a fee. I resolved the issue with a TS-85 and some Flat Tail Call.

You can make money trapping. You can feed yourself trapping.

I miss the Entrepreneurial Trapper, and would be willing to pay a subscription fee for it.
